Takeaways

  • Hanging height for pendant lights and chandeliers should be measured from the bottom up instead of from the ceiling down.

Quick Tips for How to Hang a Pendant Light

Some quick rules of thumb for pendant light height:

  • The pendant hanging height over a bar or island should start at 30–36 inches above the countertop
  • For pendant light height over a dining table, try 28–34 inches above the tabletop
  • If you’re hanging lights over side tables and bedsides, keep them about 18–24 inches above the surface
  • In entryways and stairwells, aim for 7 feet of clearance

These ranges for how low to hang a pendant light keep sightlines open and the glow cozy — then your calculator result refines the exact pendant length for your space.

Customize Your Pendant Light Height

Color Cord Company makes customization for your pendant size and cord length friendly and fast — choose your cord color, socket, and canopy, then use the calculator to get an exact measurement plus a “CCC Suggested Length” (rounded up for wiggle room). If you’re swagging a plug-in, the tool accounts for two ceiling hooks and lets you choose a taut run or a draped look. It’s friendly, flexible, and designed for DIYers, makers, and pros alike.

✨ Try our favorite trick: the balloon and string hack. Before you order, hang a balloon from the ceiling with a piece of string where you think the light should go. Adjust the height until it feels just right for your space — whether that’s above a dining table, kitchen island, or bedside. Once you’re happy with how high you hang the pendant light, simply measure the string length (or the drop from the ceiling to the balloon) and enter that number into the pendant length calculator below. It’s a playful, DIY-friendly way to test different hanging heights without any tools — and it makes sure your cord length is spot on.

How to Measure: Ceiling to Outlet, Pendant Hanging Height, Swag Span, Swag Depth

Step 1: Ceiling to Outlet (CTO) — For plug-in pendants, measure the vertical distance from the ceiling to the wall outlet where your cord begins.

Step 2: Hang Height (HH) — Measure from the ceiling to the top of the light fixture at your target drop (use our balloon-and-string trick to test different heights).

Step 3: Swag Span (SS) — If you’re swagging, measure the ceiling distance between the hook above the outlet or j-box and the hook above the fixture.

Step 4: Swag Depth (SD) — Decide how much the cord should dip for that relaxed, draped arc. You can check out our guide for how to swag a pendant light for some examples.

Enter all four values into the pendant length calculator. It returns an exact pendant light height plus a CCC Suggested Length, which includes rounding and optional variance so you have enough cord to route cleanly around beams, shelves, or art.

Pendant Length Calculator

Choose your pendant type. We’ll show the exact length and our CCC Suggested Length (rounded up to the next whole foot).

Plug-In: Assumes two ceiling hooks (one above outlet & one above fixture). Suggested length limited to 4–30 ft.
If you’re not swagging, leave swag fields hidden (or set them to 0).
Plug-In tip: This calculator assumes two hooks (one above the outlet/entry and one above the fixture). Using only one hook? Set SS to the ceiling distance from the wall/ceiling corner above your outlet to that hook. For a taut run, set SD = 0. For a draped look, increase SD.

Choosing the Right Cord Length (And When to Add Slack)

For most installs, a little extra slack is your friend. Add variance to your pendant light height if you plan to adjust the fixture seasonally, change bulbs or shades, or refine your furniture layout. Plug-in pendants with a swag span often look best with a gentle dip, while hard-wired pendants may need an extra foot for tidy wiring at the canopy. Our calculator bakes in these realities, so your cord length order arrives ready to hang — no guesswork, no math anxiety.

Pendant Light Height FAQ

Can you hang a pendant light from a second story?

Of course! If you have a tall entryway or grand entrance with a vaulted ceiling, you can place a large chandelier or pendant light there to create a focal point, provide ambient lighting, and ensure connection and flow throughout the space.

What is the standard pendant light height for a chandelier?

There is no standard to measure the height from the chandelier to the ceiling. Instead, you need to measure from the floor upwards. Generally, you should measure from the bottom of the chandelier to the floor to ensure you have about seven feet of clearance. A chandelier or pendant light that hangs too low can disrupt sight lines and create obstacles for people as they walk through the space.

Do you need to have hanging light fixtures in a space with vaulted ceilings?

No, your lighting design is completely up to you. However, if you have high ceilings and rely solely on recessed fixtures, you may find that the space feels a little bit empty. Using recessed fixtures only can also make the lighting feel harsh and flat. Integrating multiple lighting styles creates a layered design that provides ample illumination and enhances the aesthetic.

How wide should a chandelier or pendant light be?

The diameter of your chandelier depends on the width of the room in which it’s hanging. While pendant hanging height is one part of the equation, pendant diameter is another. When hanging a light over a counter or table, measure to ensure it’s about half the length of the table, but no more than two-thirds.
