Discover Artisan Light Fixtures

With so many new and reimagined trends hitting the home decor industry, it’s time to highlight the newest movement we’re seeing: artisan light fixtures. In a world that’s tired of mass produced products and standardized interiors, this trend is helping people shine with unique fixtures to suit their personality and aesthetic. Learn more about handmade and artisan lighting when you check out this trend spotlight from the experts at Color Cord Company today!

What Is Artisan Lighting?

When we talk about artisan products, we’re referring to handmade designs that can encompass all types of decor. You can find everything from handcrafted rugs and pillows to artisan light fixtures and place mats. In light fixtures specifically, the handcrafted element may range to include handmade shades, powder coating, assembly, and much more.

People love artisan designs because they’re unique and original, since no two handmade products will ever look exactly alike. Some people also feel that buying an artisan piece connects them to the artist and embraces the imperfections inherent in art.

Types of Artisan Lighting

Handmade lighting can be a part of every area in your home or commercial space, as these pieces can be made to fit each lighting category, including chandeliers, pendant lights, and wall sconces.

Chandeliers

When you hear the word chandelier, it’s hard not to imagine a metal creation dripping in jewels and crystals. However, with the advent of modern aesthetics and reintroduction of artisan lighting, there are many different types of chandeliers that can enhance your space. Instead of the traditional design, consider minimalist chandeliers, cottage-core statement pieces, hand woven shades, and rustic creations that feature wood beams.

Pendant Lights

This type of light fixture is a favorite for task lighting, as pendant fixtures often have shades that help direct light to land in the perfect spot. With artisan lighting, the spotlight is usually on the design of the shade — an interchangeable accessory that makes elevating your fixture design simple. You can add an artisan touch to your pendant lights when you change the shades to better express your personal sense of style.

Wall Sconces

Finally, you can find artisan lighting options in the wall mounted fixture category. These are the perfect opportunity for artists to explore unique colorways, hand-applied gold leaf, or experimentation with different materials — including stone, ceramic, and glass. Wall sconces are essential for illuminating hallways, bathrooms, and other intimate spaces where overhead lighting is too overpowering.

Our Artisan Lighting Collections

At Color Cord Company, we love collaborating with artists far and wide. And since this trend spotlight is the perfect opportunity, we’re excited to introduce you to some of our newest collaborations and collections. Take a look at a few of the artisan light fixtures we’ve managed to create with the help of some of the most brilliant and passionate people in home decor.

Handspun

Inspired by Industrial-era utilitarianism and infused with modern aesthetics, the Handspun collection is our collaboration with Ken Sharp, local Colorado artist and metalsmith. In this collection, Ken focuses on using a special metal-spinning technique that results in a unique brush-like texture on the metal shades of the fixtures. He also chose to make a statement with this artisan lighting collection by showcasing oversized fixtures, perfect as chandeliers in dining rooms and entryways.

Modern Science Project

Straight from the mind of Amanda Woodcock, a product designer and engineer, the Modern Science Project collection is an exploration of color, shape, and materials. Two primary silhouettes drive this collection, an angular prismatic shade and smooth tulip-inspired design. You’ll find these adorning wall sconces, pendent lights, and flush mount fixtures in a way that highlights the iridescent gradient glaze on the ceramic. This artisan lighting collection is whimsical, elegant, and joyful — bringing a burst of color into your space.

Boutique

While not under our Artist Collaboration selection, we still consider the Boutique collection artisan lighting because every fixture is hand assembled and hand powder coated by craftspeople in our Denver, Colorado, studio. This specialty collection focuses on using neutral colors in new ways to highlight the beauty of nature. Each hue is inspired by an element of the natural world and we combine them in different ways to infuse a space with specific scenery, like Desert Sunset, Rustic Meadow, or Ochre Canyon.

Flux

Originating with another Denver-based studio, the Flux collection from Flux Studio is the result of an exploration into the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. This collection primarily features blown glass shades that utilize imperfections to tell a story. Every unique curve, unexpected air bubble, and organic silhouette highlights something new about the lighting design. Whether you pair your glass shade with a Black, White, Brushed Nickel, or Raw Brass finish, the shade tells a subtle story of creativity and passion.
